About this strain
The parasol is one of the most prized woodland and meadow mushrooms. It has an impressive scaly cap that reaches 20–30 cm across in mature mushrooms, and a tall, slender stem with a movable ring. Only the caps are eaten — fried in breadcrumbs like a cutlet, they are a classic of Polish cooking.
The parasol is not a typical commercial crop, but it can be introduced into a garden: in nature it grows in grass at woodland edges, so it does best in a bright spot at the edge of a lawn, near trees or shrubs. Mushrooms appear from July to October, often only in the year after the patch is set up. Caution: the parasol can be confused with the deadly death cap (Amanita phalloides) and the poisonous panther cap (Amanita pantherina) — only pick mushrooms you can identify with certainty.
How to grow it
Preparation
- Substrate
- garden bed: hardwood chips and sawdust covered with 3–5 cm of soil; the species likes calcium-rich soil — the spot can be dusted with feed chalk or agricultural lime; a bright, grassy spot
- Spawn rate
- approx. 1 kg of spawn per 1–3 m² of bed
Harvest
Mushrooms from July to October. The mycelium needs about 3 months to establish, so the first mushrooms often appear only the following year; fruiting can be irregular.
Please note: these growing parameters bring together the experience of practising growers — a starting point, not a guarantee of results. Every grow has its own substrate, climate and equipment, and even small differences can noticeably change the yield. Adjust these values to your own conditions.
