Grifola umbellata

Mother cultures (Petri dish)
About this strain
The umbrella polypore is a rare mushroom, protected in Poland. It forms clusters of dozens of small, round, light brown caps on branching white stalks rising from a shared base. Underground it produces black, tuber-like sclerotia, known in Chinese tradition as zhu ling. Young fruiting bodies are edible, delicate and slightly nutty.
It is a species for experienced growers: it grows slowly and in the cool, and in nature it is associated with the roots of broadleaf trees and with honey fungus. It is most often grown for its sclerotia, by burying colonised substrate in the soil.
How to grow it
Preparation
- Substrate
- hardwood sawdust with supplements, sterilised; for sclerotia — colonised substrate buried in the soil near the roots of broadleaf trees
Please note: these growing parameters bring together the experience of practising growers — a starting point, not a guarantee of results. Every grow has its own substrate, climate and equipment, and even small differences can noticeably change the yield. Adjust these values to your own conditions.
