About this strain
Experimental crop: morels fruit unpredictably, depending on conditions we have little control over — a harvest is not guaranteed.
The black morel is a European member of the morels in section Elata. It has an elongated, conical cap with distinct lengthwise ridges, ranging from grey-brown to almost black, hollow inside. It tastes and smells as intense as the yellow morel; it too is eaten only cooked. Morels are protected in Poland, so growing them is the only way to enjoy them legally in the kitchen.
It is grown just like the yellow morel — outdoors on prepared beds, through sclerotia that overwinter in the soil. The mushrooms appear in early spring, usually a little earlier than yellow morels.
How to grow it
Preparation
- Substrate
- prepared soil beds; in commercial growing also nutrient bags laid on the beds
Harvest
Mushrooms in early spring, at soil temperatures of approx. 10–18°C.
Please note: these growing parameters bring together the experience of practising growers — a starting point, not a guarantee of results. Every grow has its own substrate, climate and equipment, and even small differences can noticeably change the yield. Adjust these values to your own conditions.
